Summer fun time at Rainy Lake Houseboats
The blueberries are ripe and sweet! You will find many in the shady areas of the islands and mainland. Berries should be available through August 5th. The hiking trail in Anderson bay has a lot of berries just off the trail.
The bald eagles have hatched their eggs. The first nest you will see is just a hundred yards past marker #19. The eaglets are learning how to fly; they are all dark brown with no white markings. It is really fun to see them grow so fast. The nests are often empty this time of the year but they return to rest and spend the nights usually until mid August.
Our loons had some nesting success. We had higher than normal waters in May and June this year, making nesting difficult. I have seen several sets of baby loons in the different areas of the park; one set is living in our bay at the houseboats.
The water is warm and ready for swimming, skiing, and pull behind the boat water toys. We do not supply them at base but can fill yours with air if you bring them with you. Water temps in the main lake are 71 degrees and about 74 degrees in the bays and on the beaches.
Fishing has been good with the fish using many different areas of the lake. Please read the fishing report article in this newsletter. Leeches and night crawlers have been the best baits lately.
Gas prices are dropping. We have had the least expensive marina or resort gas in northern Minnesota all year. We have lowered the cost again today. Our last newsletter had an article on how to save money during your Rainy Lake Houseboat Vacation. If you are coming yet this year I highly recommend reading it. Here is a quick link to the article: http://www.rainylakehouseboats.com/newsletter/may08newsletter2.html
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
